On a cold and blustery day I raced from Amsterdam Centraal station hustling on my way to Brouwerij ‘t IJ to meet a friend who was in town from the USA. I was late because I often think it takes way less time to get places then it actually does. Plus my journey to meet my friend involved me biking from Nieuwegein to Utrecht Centraal Station then taking a train to Amsterdam Centraal Station then walking to the brewery. This was quite a journey to get a beer. However, it was all worth it when I got to my location and ordered my first tasty beer. Beers post work makes everything better.
I had suggested Brouwerij ‘t IJ because of its dutch-i-ness. It is brewery housed in a windmill right in Amsterdam. Well technically the brewery is housed in a an old bathhouse adjacent to the De Gooyer windmill, but still it is windmill adjacent beer drinking. How Dutch!
The place is often packed and in nicer weather you can sit outside. On this particular day in March the weather was just too damn cold to be outside for any length of time. Regardless, the inside atmosphere was busy and boisterous with long picnic tables full of pleasantly alcoholed people.
I recommend this place if you are wandering through the streets of Amsterdam since it is located a bit away from the main tourist stuff and you get drink beer beneath a windmill. Proost!
